External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a scathing critique of the western media’s coverage of Indian elections, dismissing their criticism and cautioning against giving unsolicited advice to India on electoral practices.

Speaking at the launch of the Bangla edition of his book ‘Why Bharat Matters’ in Kolkata, Jaishankar condemned the negative portrayal of Indian elections by certain western media outlets, labeling it as unwarranted interference in India’s democratic processes.

In his remarks, Jaishankar took aim at countries “that have to go to court to decide the result of their election,” questioning their credibility in lecturing India on conducting free and fair polls.

He highlighted the irony of such nations offering advice while grappling with their own electoral challenges.

Referring to the scrutiny faced by India from western media, Jaishankar emphasized the need to resist external pressures and uphold India’s sovereignty in electoral matters.

Furthermore, Jaishankar dismissed criticisms of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 as a “mind game” orchestrated by certain quarters in the world.

He underscored the reluctance of western countries to relinquish their perceived influence over global affairs, suggesting that their criticisms stemmed from discomfort with India’s independent stance.

Jaishankar also criticized the preference of certain western media outlets for endorsing specific candidates and political parties, accusing them of bias and manipulation.

He emphasized the need for India to remain vigilant against external attempts to influence its electoral process.

Addressing concerns over voter turnout, Jaishankar highlighted the resilience and commitment of Indian voters, noting the significant participation even in challenging circumstances.

He praised the ongoing democratic exercise in India, citing the high voter turnout observed during the first four phases of the general elections.

Against the backdrop of India’s ongoing Lok Sabha elections, Jaishankar’s remarks serve as a staunch defense of India’s democratic principles and a rebuke to external criticism.

With three phases of voting remaining and the counting of votes scheduled for June 4, Jaishankar’s comments reflect India’s unwavering commitment to conducting transparent and inclusive elections.
