In Short

  • 66-year-old Indian-origin woman stabbed at London bus stop, dies
  • Victim, Anita Mukhey, worked part-time for NHS
  • Accused arrested on same day in north London

Anita Mukhey, a 66-year-old NHS medical secretary of Indian descent, met a tragic end as she was fatally stabbed at a bus stop in north-west London.

The harrowing incident occurred on May 9, around 11:50 am (local time), sending shockwaves through the community.

The perpetrator, identified as 22-year-old Jalal Debella, has been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Mukhey, known for her dedicated service within the National Health Service (NHS), was awaiting transportation at the Burnt Oak Broadway bus stop in the Edgware area of London when Debella launched a vicious attack, fatally stabbing her in the chest and neck.

Despite immediate medical attention, Mukhey succumbed to her injuries at the scene, leaving behind a grieving family and community.

Prompt police response led to Debella’s swift arrest on suspicion of murder in the Colindale area of north London on the same day.

He was subsequently charged with Mukhey’s murder, as well as the possession of an offensive weapon, further underscoring the severity of the crime.

At the Old Bailey Court in London, where Debella appeared, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) presented preliminary findings indicating sharp force injuries to the front of Mukhey’s chest and neck as the primary cause of death.

The court proceedings revealed that Debella is set to enter his plea of guilty or not guilty at the next hearing scheduled for August.

In the wake of this tragedy, Mukhey’s family, through a statement issued via the police, expressed their profound grief and requested privacy during this challenging period.

Described as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Mukhey’s untimely demise has left a void not only in her family but also in the wider community she served with dedication and compassion.
