On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly criticized Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in response to the controversial statements made by Congress leader Sam Pitroda.
Pitroda’s comments sparked widespread outrage as he remarked that people in East India resembled the Chinese, while those from South India looked like Africans.
Prime Minister Modi denounced this, stating that such remarks were an “insult to several people of the country on the basis of their skin colour.”
During a political rally in Telangana’s Warangal district, PM Modi expressed his deep concern over the implications of equating merit with skin color and emphasized that he could tolerate personal attacks but not when they targeted the people.
He further questioned Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement of such derogatory sentiments and affirmed that the nation would not tolerate a racist mentality.
PM Modi also took the opportunity to stress the Indian government’s commitment to inclusivity by highlighting the appointments of a Dalit President, Ram Nath Kovind, in 2014, and an Adivasi President, Droupadi Murmu, in 2019.
He underscored the Congress party’s attempts to discredit President Murmu, who comes from an Adivasi background, insinuating that the opposition party undervalued individuals based on their social and ethnic identities.
The Prime Minister’s strong condemnation was echoed by various political figures, including Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who criticized Pitroda’s remarks as evidence of the Congress’s divisive agenda.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh swiftly disassociated the party from Pitroda’s comments, labeling them as “most unfortunate and unacceptable.”
In response to the backlash, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra dismissed PM Modi’s reaction to Pitroda’s remarks as a diversion from more pressing national issues, such as employment, inflation, and women’s safety.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Giriraj Singh demanded apologies from Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, while Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated the essential unity of diverse Indian identities.
Pitroda’s controversial comments and the subsequent fallout underscore the sensitivity and importance of inclusive and respectful dialogue in a diverse and multi-ethnic society like India.
The incident has reignited discussions around the need for political leaders to promote unity and respect for all citizens, regardless of their background, and has drawn attention to the potential repercussions of divisive rhetoric.
