  • Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will only campaign for elections, sources said
  • Final decision on Rahul Gandhi’s candidacy Amethi or Raebareli within 24 hours
  • Congress leaders had pitched for the Gandhi siblings to contest from the two seats

Amidst speculation surrounding the Congress party’s candidate selection for the crucial Amethi and Raebareli Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, sources have indicated that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is unlikely to contest in the upcoming elections.

Instead, it is reported that she will focus on campaigning for the party.

Sources revealed to India Today TV that the final decision on whether Congress MP Rahul Gandhi will contest from Amethi or Raebareli will be made within the next 24 hours.

This development follows discussions within the Congress’s Central Election Committee, where the suggestion to field the Gandhi siblings in Amethi and Raebareli was reportedly proposed.

The stakes are high as both Amethi and Raebareli are scheduled to go to the polls on May 20. In the previous 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Union Minister Smriti Irani secured victory in Amethi, defeating Rahul Gandhi, who had held the seat since 2004.

Rahul Gandhi is currently seeking reelection from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala, where voting took place on April 26.

Additionally, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi recently vacated the Raebareli seat, which she had represented since 2004, due to her transition to the Rajya Sabha.

The anticipation surrounding the Amethi-Raebareli constituency choices was addressed during a press conference on April 27.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge responded to criticism from the BJP regarding Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from Wayanad instead of Amethi, highlighting the need for consistency in scrutiny across political parties by referencing the seat changes of prominent BJP leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani.

As the electoral landscape continues to evolve, the Congress party remains engaged in strategic deliberations to maximize its electoral prospects in these key constituencies.
