A devastating accident in Greenville County, South Carolina, has claimed the lives of three Indian women from Gujarat. The fatal incident occurred when their speeding vehicle lost control, careened into a divider, and soared 20 feet into the air before crashing into trees on the opposite side of a bridge along Interstate 85.
The victims have been identified as Rekhaben Dilipbhai Patel, Sangeetaben Bhaveshbhai Patel, and Manishaben Rajendrabhai Patel, all hailing from the Borsad tehsil of Anand district in Gujarat.
The wreckage of the vehicle was discovered wedged against trees, shattered into multiple pieces, indicative of the sheer force of the impact.
Chief Deputy Coroner Mike Ellis from the Greenville County Coroner’s Office described the harrowing nature of the crash, stating, “When the vehicle jumped all four lanes of traffic, it actually struck trees probably at least 20 feet above the ground.”
He expressed profound sorrow at the loss, particularly given the familial connection among the deceased.
Reports indicate that the driver of the vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Ellis noted that the SUV was traveling at a speed exceeding the posted limit, emphasizing the rarity of such a high-speed departure from the roadway.
“Very seldom do you see a vehicle that leaves the roadway at such a high rate of speed that it jumps 4–6 lanes of traffic and lands in the trees approximately 20 feet,” he remarked.
The absence of other vehicles involved in the accident underscores the significant role of the vehicle’s excessive speed as the primary factor contributing to the tragic outcome.
