In Short

  • Arvind Kejriwal gets first insulin dose after March 21 arrest
  • His sugar level spiked to 320
  • Dosage administered amid ‘denied insulin’ row

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s health has been a subject of concern, especially since his recent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection to a money laundering case related to the Delhi liquor policy.

Being a Type-2 Diabetes patient, Kejriwal’s condition took a serious turn when his sugar levels spiked to a worrying 320 while in judicial custody at Tihar Jail.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sources revealed that this spike led to the administration of insulin to Kejriwal, marking the first time the Chief Minister received such treatment since his arrest.

The decision came amid a growing controversy surrounding the denial of insulin to Kejriwal, who had raised concerns over his deteriorating health while incarcerated.

The AAP supremo’s incarceration has been marred by health-related controversies, with Kejriwal’s camp alleging that the prison administration misrepresented his health status, potentially due to political pressure.

In a letter addressed to the Tihar Jail Superintendent, Kejriwal highlighted his urgent need for insulin due to dangerously high glucose readings ranging between 250 and 320.

Confirming the insulin administration, a Tihar Jail source disclosed that the decision was made following advice from an AIIMS doctor, who recommended administering the dosage if deemed necessary.

Previously, Kejriwal had been taking 50 units of insulin daily before his confinement.

In a bid to address his health concerns, doctors from AIIMS conducted a thorough consultation with Kejriwal on April 20, ensuring no serious issues were detected.

However, the issue of insulin was neither raised nor suggested during this session, according to sources.

The controversy surrounding Kejriwal’s insulin intake intensified when the Enforcement Directorate alleged that he had intentionally consumed foods such as mangoes, aloo puri, and sweets to elevate his blood sugar levels, potentially paving the way for a medical bail.

However, Kejriwal’s legal team countered these claims, asserting that his dietary choices were minimal, with mangoes consumed only thrice and aloo puri eaten as part of religious observance during Navratra.

As the debate surrounding Kejriwal’s health continues to unfold, political figures like AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj have accused authorities of deliberately endangering the Chief Minister’s well-being.

Bharadwaj’s statements underscore the broader political ramifications of Kejriwal’s health struggles and the ongoing legal battles surrounding his arrest.
