Senator Bob Menendez is facing increasing demands from his Democratic colleagues to step down from his position, a day after he pleaded his innocence in response to federal corruption and bribery charges. A growing number of fellow Democrats, including those facing challenging reelection bids in the 2024 Senate race, have called on Menendez to resign, citing the gravity of the allegations.
While emphasizing Menendez’s right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence, many Democratic senators argued that the allegations were too serious to be disregarded. Senator Jon Tester of Montana, who is running for reelection in 2024, expressed deep concern over the charges against Menendez and called for his resignation, citing the need to maintain public faith in the U.S. Senate.
Senator Cory Booker, a fellow Democrat from New Jersey and previously a friend and mentor to Menendez, also broke his silence on the matter. Booker echoed the sentiments of other Democratic senators, stating that Menendez stepping down would be the best course of action for both their constituents. He clarified that stepping down should not be seen as an admission of guilt but as a recognition that public office often demands significant personal sacrifices.
The calls for Menendez’s resignation gained momentum on Tuesday, with 20 Democratic senators now urging him to leave his office, representing over a third of the 48-member Democratic caucus. Among the senators who have called for Menendez’s resignation are John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Peter Welch of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and many others.
Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, joined the chorus, stating that if Menendez does not resign, an immediate Senate Ethics Committee investigation should be initiated.
Senator John Fetterman, the first Democrat to call for Menendez’s resignation, humorously remarked, “The last time there was a guy in New Jersey with this much cash in his house was Tony Soprano.” Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut also expressed deep concern over the allegations and called for Menendez’s resignation, intending to redirect contributions from Menendez to his reelection campaign to a charitable cause.
The pressure on Senator Menendez to resign comes as he faces federal charges, and his response to these calls will be closely watched as the political landscape evolves.
