President Joe Biden’s German Shepherd, Commander, has reportedly bitten another Secret Service agent, marking the 11th known biting incident involving the 2-year-old purebred dog.
The latest incident occurred on Monday night at around 8 p.m. when a Uniformed Division police officer came into contact with the First Family’s pet and was bitten, according to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Fortunately, the injured officer received prompt medical attention on the White House grounds and is reported to be in stable condition.
This incident follows the revelation of 10 previous biting attacks by Commander against Secret Service officers, which were made public through records released by the conservative group Judicial Watch in July. In one instance, a Secret Service agent had to be hospitalized due to the severity of the bite.
Commander joined the Biden family as a gift in December 2021 after their previous dog, Major, was sent to live with family friends due to a series of biting incidents. Unfortunately, a third Biden family dog, Champ, passed away in June 2021 at the age of 13.
Elizabeth Alexander, the communications director for First Lady Jill Biden, commented on the matter, acknowledging the stressful environment that the White House can pose for family pets. She also expressed the First Family’s gratitude to the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff for their dedication to ensuring everyone’s safety.
In response to Commander’s previous biting incidents, the First Lady’s office announced that additional leashing protocols and training would be implemented. They also intended to establish designated areas on the White House grounds where Commander could safely run and exercise.
