Bob Barker, renowned as the iconic host of the beloved game show “The Price is Right,” succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease on August 26, according to his death certificate. Multiple reports from Entertainment Tonight, People magazine, and ABC7 confirmed this cause of death.
The document, released recently, disclosed that Barker had grappled with Alzheimer’s for several years. In addition to Alzheimer’s, the death certificate listed contributing factors as hypertension, hypothyroidism, and hyperlipidemia, as reported by ET and ABC7.
Barker’s publicist, Roger Neal, conveyed the sad news of Barker’s passing in August, describing him as the “World’s Greatest MC who ever lived.”
Bob Barker achieved the distinction of being named TV’s Most Durable Performer by Guinness World Records twice, a testament to his enduring presence as the face of “The Price is Right” from 1972 to 2007.
Barker was not only known for his television career but also for his advocacy of vegetarianism as a preventive measure against Alzheimer’s disease. In a promotional video produced for PETA in 2013, he attributed his mental and physical well-being to his more than 30 years of vegetarianism. Barker emphasized the potential link between meat consumption and an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
In the video, he shared, “So, to protect your memory, eat vegetarian and keep your wits about you until a ripe old age.”
In 2023, an estimated 6.7 million adults aged 65 and older in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s, with a significant majority being women, according to data from the Alzheimer’s Association.
CBS paid tribute to its former host with a primetime special titled “The Price is Right: A Tribute to Bob Barker” just last week. Drew Carey, who succeeded Barker as the show’s host, presided over the special.
Drew Carey expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “Very sad day for the Price Is Right family, and animal lovers all over the world. There hasn’t been a day on set that I didn’t think of Bob Barker and thank him. I will carry his memory in my heart forever.”
Bob Barker’s illustrious career garnered him 18 Daytime Emmy Awards, and in 1999, he received a Daytime Emmy Award for lifetime achievement. His remarkable contributions to television led to his induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in early 2004.
