WASHINGTON – In a recent development, First Lady Jill Biden has tested positive for COVID-19, as confirmed by the White House. Fortunately, President Joe Biden has tested negative for the virus.
According to Elizabeth Alexander, the communications director for the first lady, Jill Biden is currently experiencing only mild symptoms. She has chosen to remain at the Biden’s vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where the first couple was spending Labor Day weekend.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced that President Biden underwent a COVID test on Monday evening following the first lady’s positive result, and he tested negative. Jean-Pierre added that the president will continue to be tested regularly throughout the week and monitor for any symptoms.
As of now, it remains unclear what specific protocols will be enacted on the White House campus in response to the first lady’s positive test. The White House has yet to disclose any additional precautions that President Biden may take in the coming days.
Despite this development, a scheduled Medal of Honor ceremony for an Army veteran on Tuesday afternoon, attended by President Biden, remains on his official White House schedule.
The news comes at a time when COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise, with a nearly 19% increase in hospitalizations over the past week, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
It’s worth noting that this is not the first time the first lady has tested positive for COVID-19. She previously contracted the virus in August 2022, shortly after her husband’s own infection in July 2022. Joe Biden initially tested negative but later had a “rebound” positive case, linked to his use of the antiviral medication Paxlovid.
Both President Joe Biden, 80, and First Lady Jill Biden, 72, are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and have received booster shots.
Despite the first lady’s positive test, President Biden is still scheduled to travel to India for a summit of the Group of 20 nations on Thursday. Afterward, he will visit Vietnam and Alaska on his way back to Washington.
