In a major development, legendary actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan has announced that his upcoming film Thug Life will not be released in Karnataka until a dialogue is held with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). The move comes in the wake of a controversy triggered by Haasan’s recent remark claiming that “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” which has sparked widespread outrage across Karnataka.
The controversy began during a promotional event for Thug Life in Chennai, where Kamal Haasan made a comment highlighting linguistic connections between Tamil and Kannada. His statement, suggesting Kannada evolved from Tamil, was intended to emphasize cultural unity but was perceived by many as dismissive and historically inaccurate.
Following the backlash, the KFCC issued a warning, threatening to block the film’s release in the state unless Haasan issued a formal apology.
Kamal Haasan’s production company filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking protection for the film’s release. However, the court did not respond favorably. During the hearing, the presiding judge questioned Haasan’s qualifications to make such statements and suggested that a public figure of his stature should be more mindful of people’s sentiments.
The judge even remarked, “You may be Kamal Haasan, but you cannot hurt public sentiments,” and emphasized that a simple apology or clarification would ease tensions.
In an attempt to de-escalate the issue, Kamal Haasan submitted a letter to the KFCC explaining that his statement was misunderstood. He expressed regret over the misinterpretation but stopped short of issuing a direct apology.
Despite this, the KFCC remained firm in its stance, reiterating that Thug Life would not be allowed to release in Karnataka unless a formal and public apology is made.
As of now, the release of Thug Life in Karnataka is on hold. The Karnataka High Court has postponed the hearing to June 10, allowing time for both parties to engage in discussion and potentially reach an amicable resolution.
Directed by Mani Ratnam and featuring music by AR Rahman, Thug Life is scheduled for nationwide release on June 5, but Karnataka remains a major question mark in its distribution strategy.
The ongoing controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan’s remarks serves as a reminder of the deep cultural and linguistic sensitivities that exist across India. While creative freedom is vital, public figures also carry the responsibility of promoting harmony. As fans and stakeholders await a final resolution, all eyes are now on the June 10 hearing that could decide the film’s fate in Karnataka.
