Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi expressed her support for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal, who recently accused an aide of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of assault.
Gandhi emphasized her stance on supporting women regardless of political affiliations and urged the AAP to address the issue and find a resolution.
In her statement on Thursday, Priyanka Gandhi highlighted her commitment to standing with women who face injustices, regardless of the political context.
She affirmed her support for Maliwal, emphasizing that she would advocate for any woman facing mistreatment.
Despite being currently engaged in Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi expressed her readiness to extend support to Maliwal and engage in dialogue if necessary.
Addressing the situation directly, Gandhi urged Kejriwal to take appropriate action if he is aware of the matter, expressing hope that he would work towards a resolution acceptable to Maliwal.
While advocating for Maliwal’s cause, Gandhi also questioned the credibility of BJP leaders commenting on the issue, pointing out their perceived inaction on previous cases of gender-based violence.
Maliwal’s allegations surfaced after she visited the Civil Lines police station in New Delhi and accused a member of Kejriwal’s personal staff of assaulting her at the Chief Minister’s official residence.
Although no formal complaint was filed, senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh admitted the allegations in a subsequent press conference, pledging that Kejriwal would take decisive action.
Kejriwal himself has not publicly addressed the allegations.
The BJP seized on the controversy, criticizing Kejriwal for his perceived silence and accusing him of behaving inappropriately.
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia went further, characterizing Kejriwal as the primary wrongdoer in Maliwal’s complaint.
In response to the allegations, Delhi Police dispatched a team to Maliwal’s residence, and the National Commission for Women summoned Kejriwal’s aide, Bibhav Kumar, for questioning.
The incident has sparked significant attention and raised concerns about women’s safety and accountability in political circles.
