White House blasts Marjorie Taylor Greene for threatening government shutdown over Biden impeachment inquiry

In a scathing rebuke, the White House has condemned Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia for her alarming remarks, signaling her willingness to halt government funding unless Congress initiates an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. With a stern warning to Republicans, the White House urged them not to succumb to the influence of the “hardcore fringe” within their party and risk a damaging shutdown.

During a town hall gathering held in her district, the staunch conservative firebrand Greene unequivocally stated, “I have made the decision not to vote for government funding unless a comprehensive impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden has been commenced.” Such a proposition from Greene has promptly become a matter of concern as Congress is scheduled to reconvene soon after the Labor Day weekend. President Biden has urged Congress to adopt a temporary funding measure to prevent a government shutdown when the fiscal year ends on September 30th.

The White House, however, swiftly responded to Greene’s statement, cautioning against the disastrous consequences of allowing the “extreme House members” to instigate a government shutdown. Andrew Bates, the White House spokesperson, emphasized the negative impact on the economy, disaster preparedness, and the military’s guaranteed pay, underscoring that the American people deserve better.

Moreover, Greene further stipulated that she would not endorse government funding unless specific conditions were met. One such condition is defunding what she terms the “Biden regime’s weaponized government,” which encompasses ending the financial support for special counsel Jack Smith. Smith has been leading two criminal cases against former President Donald Trump. Additionally, Greene expressed her opposition to funding resolutions that endorse COVID-19 vaccine mandates, citing their perceived obsolescence, as well as any increase in aid to Ukraine to counter Russian aggression.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, recognizing the far-right flank’s apprehension, has attempted to frame a potential impeachment inquiry against President Biden and the ongoing House Oversight Committee investigation into Hunter Biden’s overseas business involvements as incentives for their support in funding the government beyond September.

It is important to note that Republicans have failed to produce compelling evidence indicating financial benefits received by then-Vice President Joe Biden due to his son’s position as a board member for Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company. Despite this, Greene’s steadfast determination to prioritize the impeachment agenda remains concerning.

Andrew Bates warned that it would be regrettable and disappointing if House Republicans succumbed to the agenda of the “hardcore fringe” within their party, placing a baseless impeachment stunt above crucial national priorities. These priorities include combating fentanyl trafficking, safeguarding national security, and funding the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
