Despite health challenges, the former president and first lady are living together and happy.

Former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, both facing health issues, continue to live together and are deeply in love, according to their grandson, Jason Carter.

“They’re coming to the end, as we know,” said Jason Carter, chairman of the Carter Center’s Board of Trustees and an attorney, in an interview with USA TODAY.

The Carter Center, the charitable organization founded by the former first couple, announced earlier this year that the former president had entered hospice care. In May, the Carter family disclosed that the former first lady had been diagnosed with dementia.

“He’s been in hospice now for several months, but they are happy,” Jason Carter shared. “They are together. They are at home. They’re in love, and I don’t think anyone gets more than that. I mean, it’s a perfect situation for this time in their lives.”

Despite her diagnosis, Rosalynn Carter, who celebrated her 96th birthday last month, is experiencing moments of joy, according to her grandson. Jason Carter mentioned that both grandparents are doing as well as can be expected.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who will turn 99 on October 1, faces significant physical challenges. Nonetheless, he enjoys watching baseball games and spending time with family “almost every day.”

The former president and President Joe Biden continue to maintain close communication. President Biden frequently writes to Jimmy Carter, expressing his thoughts and prayers for his well-being.

Jason Carter attributes this close bond to the humility and grounded nature shared by both Jimmy Carter and President Biden. He emphasized that Jimmy Carter, despite spending only eight years in major elected offices, has remained rooted in his Plains, Georgia home, which he built in the 1950s.

To mark the upcoming 99th birthday of the former president, The Carter Center is inviting the public to share messages and well-wishes for a “digital mosaic” that will be enjoyed by President Carter, his family, and people around the world. Contributions can be sent to The Carter Center or shared on social media using the hashtag #JimmyCarter99.

Paige Alexander, CEO of The Carter Center, noted that President Carter has dedicated his life to improving the world and expressed the hope that this initiative would allow everyone to express their love and gratitude for his contributions.
