The rivalry between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump continues to escalate, with the political action committee (PAC) “Never Back Down,” supporting DeSantis, releasing a video on Tuesday that pokes fun at Trump. The video humorously highlights the scattered boos and middle finger gestures directed at Trump during last Saturday’s Iowa-Iowa State college football game.
The video’s caption reads, “Iowa is done with Trump,” emphasizing what it perceives as a negative reception for the former president. It playfully suggests that Trump’s message to Iowa was “A middle finger.”
Trump’s allies have a different perspective, contending that the crowd at Iowa State’s stadium in Ames overwhelmingly cheered the 2024 presidential frontrunner. Some even claim that DeSantis faced a similar response from the fans while mingling with the crowd.
Trump spokeswoman Liz Harrington took to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to remark, “Ron DeSantis goes to a college football game in a sweater vest, and all he got was a middle finger.”
In addition to the football game incident, the pro-DeSantis video also underscores news reports suggesting that Trump supporters in Iowa are concerned about his limited presence in the state leading up to the Jan. 15 caucuses, which mark the beginning of the Republican presidential nomination process.
Trump’s team, however, dismisses these concerns and insists they are in a strong position in Iowa. They point to polls showing Trump with a commanding lead over DeSantis and other GOP contenders. According to the Real Clear Politics average of polls in the crucial early voting state, Trump enjoys 46% support, compared to DeSantis’ 15.8%.
“They should reassess their failed strategy because they are slipping into third place in the polls,” remarked Trump spokesman Steven Cheung.
The rivalry between DeSantis and Trump promises to remain a prominent feature of the political landscape as the 2024 presidential race continues to unfold.
